Can you imagine a day without the internet? For many of us, we have become so interconnected with the web that this would be hard to picture. From Desktop Computers to Smart Phones, we use the internet to find not only answer personal and work emails but to do everything from find directions to look up recipes for dinner.
Here are 10 of the things that we often take for granted when using the internet:
- Keeping in touch with family and friends
Today staying connected with those who arenât a short drive away is easy and simpler than ever. Email addresses are almost as common as last names nowadays and everyone seems to have one. Email makes it easy to send messages to these people without paying for long distance phone calls. Sites such as Skype and Face Time allow us to see and hear our friends and family through the comfort of our own home. Through social media platforms we can have constant updates from the people we care about and reconnect with those with whom we might have lost touch.
- âJust Google itâ
With the help of an internet connection, we can have entire encyclopedias right at our fingertips. Sites such as Google allow us to search for anything we would possibly want and get answers almost instantaneously. We can research anything and everything we want without going to the library and quicker than searching through an index.
- Diagnose and Treat Options for Illness and Injury
Knowing what is wrong with your body is important. We take for granted the fact that we can readily look up on resources such as WebMD for different symptoms and get checklists to help with diagnosis and deciding whether going to a doctor is necessary. This allows allows patients to search medications for side effects, medication dosages and other instructions.
- Job Searching and Preparing
The internet allows those searching for work to find opportunities. We use services like Indeed and CareerBuilder to find multiple options for finding a career path. The age of the newspaper and sending out ads for jobs has long gone and many job offering are only offered online which means this is a necessity to someone going into the workforce.
- The Internet is our GPS
Finding our way around the world has never been easier. Many people no longer have use for a standard GPS and certainly have never used a printed Map. They simply place the destination into Google Maps or another service and get instant answers on how to get to the place they need to go and how long it will take. It makes traveling simple and for many it is their only option for a GPS system.
- For Work and Business
Most businesses expect a person to be at least somewhat computer literate. This means the ability to work a standard computer and to work the internet. This includes at least answering emails. Many work and businesses are integrated with the web so much that they would not survive without it.
- Blogging & Writing
A Blog is a blog because of the internet. Without the internet we wouldnât have the platform to be able to use blogs and show our writing to the world. The entire world can be your audience using a blog and this allows the user to write for the world to hear. A person reading this blog for example could be from anywhere in the world and that alone is pretty incredible! For the sake of our blog, at the end of this post please post a comment with the same of the city you are commenting from. This alone will give you an idea of just how far writing can reach!
- Marketing & Business Growth
The internet is the new âgrassrootsâ method of marketing. This allows businesses to gain coverage through websites, articles and blogs which will gain them revenue and traffic. We donât even realize how many times a day we are being advertised and marketed to on the internet. Each page allows different companies to showcase their companies through ads and this gives them possible world reach. That is very powerful for a business and websites such as this that help the world and bigger purposes wouldnât be possible without help from the internet!
- Staying Updated with the News
Having access to the internet means you have access to the news and what is going on around you. This can be the news in your community or across the country or across the world. You are able to get instant updates on what is going on in terms of war conflicts, natural disasters, politics and even famous celebrities. This allows us to be connected to what we need to know and to stay in the loop in important times.
- Weather Updates and Safety
Being able to know when a tornado warning is and when it is going to rain next can be very important. Now in certain places ( cough..cough..London) it is always raining, but many places it can be hard to know when it will rain next or how cold it will be. These weather channels can be accessed through nearly any internet capable device and keep us updated and safe through changing climate conditions.
In essence, the internet has provided us with so many advantages and we certainly have come to take them for granted. We rely on them so much that we donât realize how much we use the internet and how critical it has become for us. The internet has allowed us to stay connected across the world and as we have talked about, it has allowed websites and blogs like this to exist and bring people together for many causes. The internet is an important resource and like other resources it should be made readily available so that we can all take advantage of what it has to offer to our lives.
